Amorgos is a remarkably unspoiled island at the south-eastern edge of the Cyclades group, where traditional customs are still inextricably interwoven into a landscape as rich in beauty as in its history.” So says a locally produced tourist guide, and you know….it’s true! But seriously, Amorgos really is a wonderful holiday destination with fantastic opportunities to walk, visit beautiful villages and interesting historical sites, paint, photograph and observe local nature. If this sounds too good to be true, read on.

The Aegiali gulf is our holiday base, to be precise, the small village and the island’s second port of Ormos Aegiali, dramatically surrounded by magnificent mountains carpeted with wild flowers and rare, endemic herbs. Two, little frequented, tree-lined, sandy beaches stretch to the west of the village which is home to a handful of fishing caiques. Village amenities are not sophisticated with a handful of tavernas and a small general store being more than adequate considering ones holiday needs on such an island. Walkers will be in seventh heaven. A network of donkey tracks links the three stunning villages of Langada, Tholaria and Potamos, renowned for their traditional architecture. Along the way, one can explore deep gorges, historical churches, Byzantine monasteries and beautiful chapels, all surrounded by stunning scenery.

Further exploration of this mountainous island is essential. Hikers will relish the trek along the 5.5 kilometres old road from Aegiali to the brilliant-white village of Chora. Alternatively, hire a car and travel along the decent asphalted road. Chora is a beautiful place with views to both the east and west coast of Amorgos. 40 churches, shaded squares and narrow lanes lie beneath the dominant Venetian Castle in this must see location. A visit to the village’s Archaeological Museum will complete a memorable day.

If Amorgos does have one claim to fame, it is the astonishing, one thousand-year-old Monastery of Hozoviotissa, an amazing union of nature and art. This eight floor building known as “the monastery of the one wall” is embosomed in the rock face, 300 metres above the deep blue sea. This is all quite extraordinary, as are the stunning, holy icons that can be viewed within the confines of the monastery.

The island’s main port of Katapola is also worthy of mention. Linked to Aegiali by both a 40 kilometres asphalted road and ferries, the vibrant, busy waterfront, lined with cafes and tavernas will provide a welcome resting place for an hour or two before making the journey back to Aegiali by land or sea.
