In our opinion, there is no other harbour town in Greece that can match Symi for natural beauty. The two parts that make up Symi town are the port area of Gialos and the hillside area above of Chora. The two parts are linked by a ‘street’ of 375 steps!
The port area is both lively and cosmopolitan. The constant comings and goings of all manner of watercraft from simple fishing caiques to large inter-island ferries makes for a constantly changing tableau. Flitting between the many shops selling traditional local crafts is a pleasure but it is in the evening that Gialos is at its best. Simple tavernas, posh restaurants and bars all light up the spectacular waterfront as the sun fades. Chora offers a handful of alternative eating establishments.
As a quieter, alternative base, we have chosen the neighbouring bay of Nimborios which used to be the main port of Symi in ancient times. This delightful area is blissfully ignored by all except the cognoscenti. A cluster of sea-front houses, one taverna and two small pebble beaches are the extent of development here. Gialos can be reached either by the water taxi which runs 3 or 4 times a day, or on foot which takes about 30 minutes. Alternatively, car hire is a possibility.
Daytime activity alternates between relaxing in Nimborios, pottering in Gialos, beachcombing and walking. There are a number of beaches including Nanou & Marathounda that can be reached by using the local caiques departing each morning from Gialos. The neighbouring island of Sesklia is also served in a similar manner. There are many interesting walks which include wonderful scenery and beautiful monasteries and keen walkers will be pleased to know that with all holidays booked for 7 nights or more, we include a free walking book and map of Symi written by Lance Chilton.
