With mountains rising above 1,200 metres, forested areas and excellent beaches, Karpathos has some of the most attractive and dramatic scenery in the Greek islands. We feature three very different parts of the island. Firstly, Karpathos Town or Pighadia as it is sometimes known, is the main centre of population. Excellent tavernas, cafes and shops, a picturesque waterfront full of character and a long sandy beach are the mainstays of the town?s attractions. Close to Karpathos Town is our second holiday base, Amopi Bay.

One of the best beaches on the island and a fair smattering of tavernas and accommodations make Amopi quieter than Karpathos Town. The eastern coastline of Karpathos is blessed with many fine beaches, one of the best being at Kyra Panagia, 150 metres of fine shingle bleeds into a brilliant, turquoise sea. The low-key tourist infrastructure includes a handful of tavernas and mini-market.

Finally, the tiny village of Lefkos and neighbouring Potali Bay, also on the west coast, are firm favourites with many of our clients who pursue off the beaten track locations. Four excellent beaches, half a dozen tavernas and a few shops are the dizzy heights of Lefkos' & Potali Bay's tourist development.

There are many charming villages that are worth visiting, thus warranting the hire of a car. Adorning the lee of a ridge 9 km. west of Pighadia lies the vine-covered streets of Menetes. We would also suggest viewing the tiny fishing village of Finiki, the stepped alleys of Mesohori and the oasis town of Pyles. Most spectacular though is the northern village of Olymbos which is best reached by excursion boat to Diafani and then local bus. This living museum of music, peasant dress, crafts and dialect is a very strange and fascinating mix of medieval and modern.

With a population of just 1,200 and covering a meagre 48 square miles, Kassos is one of the few Greek islands that can still truly combine a warm welcome and very little tourist development.

Of the 5 villages on the island, the largest and main port is Phry. This rather ramshackle collection of dwellings has little natural charm although the tiny harbour for caiques is a delight and part of the main waterfront has been redeveloped and given a new lease of life. The main attraction in Phry has to be the tavernas. An abundance of fresh fish is supplied by the island's own small fishing fleet. Otherwise you will be welcomed with great friendliness by the local people, as tourists are a rarity.

A short walk across the bay and the tiny inlet of Emborio with its beach, tavernas and bobbing caiques comes into view. Walkers will revel in the gaunt remoteness of the surrounding countryside where olive groves, citrus fruit trees and small farms are interspersed between the villages of Panagia, Arvanitohori and Poli which are linked by rough roads.

Beach lovers will make the short boat journey to the neighbouring islet of Armathia which has a fine, sandy beach.

Kastelorizo, the smallest of the Dodecanese islands, is the most eastern island of Greece, barely one nautical mile from the Turkish mainland. First impressions are important, and we were immediately entranced by the attractive harbour front of the main town.

Lined by elegant mansions, cafes, tavernas and shops, closed to any form of traffic with more than 2 wheels and surrounded by imposing hills that are unusually floodlit at night, we were captivated. Although Kastelorizo is devoid of beaches, it is possible to swim from the rocks at Agios Stefanos, 40 minutes walk north of town, and the main harbour is unpolluted, so a quick dip from the terrace of the Hotel Kastellorizo is also possible.

An abundance of marine life including monk seals will interest those keen on snorkelling. Walkers who hike the zigzag set of stairs to the heights above town will be rewarded with fantastic views of the Turkish Anatolian coast. Onward paths from here continue to peaceful monasteries and the ancient citadel of Paleokastro. Boat trips from the main harbour include the stalactite infested grotto of Perasta, the islet of Rho and a fascinating day trip to Kas in Turkey.
